A man stands close to a deer and offers it food, a moment of direct contact between visitor and animal that was a popular attraction at the National Zoological Park in Washington. The Smithsonian founded the zoo in 1889 in the Rock Creek Park area, and it grew into a favorite outing for families in the early twentieth century. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of views made by a commercial firm that photographed the capital for sale to tourists and residents. Its scenes of everyday leisure give a sense of how Washingtonians spent their free afternoons before the 1930s.
