The National Zoological Park, which the Smithsonian Institution opened in 1889 on wooded land along Rock Creek in northwest Washington, was among the capital's most popular outings in the early 1900s. This view, dated only to the years between 1909 and 1920, comes from the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a commercial firm that produced scenic views of Washington for tourists. Pictures like this one show the park's grounds and the leisurely way families spent afternoons there during the Progressive Era.
