This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Carl Hayden turned to his left, a pose typical of the formal studio work the National Photo Company produced in Washington. Hayden represented Arizona in the U.S. House beginning with statehood in 1912 and moved to the Senate in 1927, serving there until 1969. The company, active in the capital from the 1910s through the 1930s, photographed many members of Congress, officials and visitors, so its studio portraits capture how public figures presented themselves during the interwar years. The print's date range places it during Hayden's years in Congress, when Arizona's new statehood and the growth of the Southwest were central to his work.
