This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Florence Prag Kahn facing the camera, a straightforward studio pose that suits the formal portrait style of the 1910s. The image came from Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed many members of Congress, government officials, and their families during that decade. Kahn was the wife of Representative Julius Kahn of California, and she later became the first Jewish woman elected to Congress, succeeding her husband after his death in 1924. Photographs like this one, taken while she was still a congressional spouse in the capital, document her presence in Washington before she held office herself.
