A front elevation shows a building as it would look from the street, with each window, cornice, and doorway drawn flat and to scale, so this sheet records the face a Washington gallery was meant to present to the public. The drawing is in graphite and belongs to the Waddy B. Wood Archive, a collection of architectural material gathered by a Washington architect. The subject is a gallery or museum in the city during the 1930s, a decade when the federal capital was adding major cultural buildings, the National Gallery of Art among them. Working elevations like this guided contractors, so the pencil lines hold the decisions of architects and clients.
