A class of students at work inside the Corcoran Art Gallery places this glass negative in one of Washington's earliest public art institutions. William Wilson Corcoran founded the gallery in 1869, and it also ran an art school, so a drawing class was a fitting subject. The National Photo Company, which recorded the city's streets, buildings and institutions in the early twentieth century, made the negative around 1920, though the title comes from company notes that have not been verified. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
