Looking down from a balcony, this view takes in the main gallery of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. William Wilson Corcoran, a banker and philanthropist, founded the museum, which opened in 1874 in a Second Empire building designed by James Renwick Jr. near the White House. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photographs and color prints of American places, made this glass plate sometime between 1905 and 1915. The cracked lower left corner of the negative is a reminder of how fragile these plates were.
