Sculpture lines the hall of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, a museum near the White House that was the first art museum in Washington, D.C. William Wilson Corcoran founded the institution in 1869, and its building opened in 1874 to show American and European art. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities and public buildings in the early twentieth century. Its date range of 1905 to 1915 places it when the gallery was a well-known civic showcase for the capital.
