The Corcoran Art Gallery, the first art museum in Washington, D.C., was founded by William Wilson Corcoran, a banker who opened it in 1874 to house American art and his growing collection. This glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection captures the building in the years just after the First World War, when the capital was busy with new government construction and visitors were drawn to its museums. The company, which operated from about 1904 to 1925, documented Washington's streets and landmarks for sale as postcards and prints. Note that the title comes from data written on the negative sleeve and is not fully verified, and the glass shows some streaking from age.
