The Corcoran Art Gallery, the subject of this glass negative, was Washington's first private art museum, founded by William Wilson Corcoran and opened in 1874 in a Renaissance Revival building on Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital and its landmarks in the early twentieth century, made the picture sometime between 1910 and 1925, when the gallery was a fixture of the city's cultural life. The negative's surface shows streaks and blemishes from age, a reminder that these glass plates were fragile records of everyday Washington.
