Few buildings on the National Mall were as closely tied to a single collector's taste as the Freer Gallery of Art, which this negative records in the years before its 1923 opening. Detroit industrialist Charles Lang Freer gave his collection of Asian art and works by James McNeill Whistler to the Smithsonian, and architect Charles Platt designed the museum to house them in a restrained classical style. The National Photo Company documented Washington's streets and landmarks on glass plates for decades, so this picture is part of a broad record of the city's changing face. Streaks and blemishes in the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, and they are worth noticing as part of the plate's history.
