Made in Washington on Nov. 8, 1863, this head-and-shoulders study shows Abraham Lincoln facing the camera, the plain, direct kind of likeness he sat for often during the Civil War. The sitting came about two weeks before he delivered the Gettysburg Address on Nov. 19, and his steady, unsmiling gaze reflects the weight of that autumn. This print was made after the original sitting, and it is catalogued among Lincoln's known portraits in Lloyd Ostendorf's and Frederick Meserve's reference works.
