Shown in half-length and turned slightly to the right, this portrait of William McKinley was made by the Washington, D.C., studio of Parker around 1900, while McKinley was in the White House. The "Copyright Office" notation shows it was registered for copyright, a common step for studio portraits that were sold and reproduced widely at the time. McKinley's likeness circulated in large numbers during his presidency, and the formal, composed pose reflects the conventions of official portraiture of the period. He was shot in Buffalo, New York, in September 1901 and died eight days later.
