The house at the corner of Columbia Road and Connecticut Avenue belonged to William Tindall, and the photograph shows a man stepping through its front door, which gives a rare sense of daily life at the entrance rather than only the building's facade. The record gives no exact date, but the subject heading places it between about 1880 and 1910, a period when the streets north of Dupont Circle were filling with detached and row houses as Washington's residential neighborhoods expanded. Pictures like this one, which record ordinary homes of that era, are useful for seeing how such houses were built and how their doorways and street frontages were arranged.
