This staircase belongs to the Washington home at 1331 Connecticut Avenue, where Alexander Graham Bell and his wife, Mabel, lived for many years. Bell, the inventor of the telephone, died in August 1922 at his summer home in Nova Scotia, and Mabel Bell died in Washington early in 1923, so this January 1923 view shows the house in the months after the couple's deaths. Gilbert H. Grosvenor, Bell's son-in-law and a longtime leader of the National Geographic Society, later gathered family photographs like this one, and the collection is now held by the Library of Congress.
