The photograph documents the funeral of John Alexander Logan, the Union general and Illinois senator who died in Washington in December 1886, and it was taken at Hutchinson's vault rather than at a church or cemetery grounds. Logan was a leader of the Grand Army of the Republic and had issued General Order No. 11 in 1868, which set aside May 30 for decorating soldiers' graves. C.M. Bell, a Washington photographer active in the late nineteenth century, made and sold the print, so it records how a prominent public funeral in the capital was staged and seen at the time.
