This engraving shows the Military Asylum in Washington, D.C., a home for disabled and aging soldiers on the city's northern edge, and it was based on a photograph by Alexander Gardner. Harper's Weekly printed it in its January 5, 1867 issue, at a time when the Civil War had left thousands of men with lasting injuries and the government was still working out how to care for them. Wood engravings like this one turned photographs into illustrations that a mass readership could easily reproduce and read, so the image reached people far beyond the grounds it depicts.
