A woman in a long skirt and hat steps into the rear seat of a large automobile while a uniformed chauffeur holds the door open for her. The picture was taken in the Washington, D.C., area in 1919, a few years after the automobile had moved from novelty to everyday fixture for well-off households. It comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of commercial photographs made for newspapers and publicity work in the capital, so its staged polish reflects how the city's prosperous classes wanted to be seen. Worth noticing is the hired driver, a reminder that owning a car in that period often meant also employing someone to operate it.
