Chemist Harvey Washington Wiley is shown in his first automobile, a steam-powered car that the title identifies as the third automobile in Washington, D.C. The picture is dated to the 1890s, a period when steam, electric, and gasoline cars competed for buyers and only a handful of vehicles of any kind traveled the capital's streets. Wiley, born in 1844, was then a government scientist who would later lead the Bureau of Chemistry and push for the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. The photograph offers a glimpse of early motoring in Washington, when owning a car still marked its driver as an enthusiast.
