This ink-and-watercolor drawing shows a steam engine built for the Washington Navy Yard, the naval base on the Anacostia River in the young federal capital. Its inscription gives Philadelphia and January 18, 1810 as the place and date, so the design was worked out there rather than on site. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the architect and engineer who oversaw much of the early construction in Washington, made drawings like this to plan machinery for the yard's water and industrial needs. The sheet is worth a close look for its working gears and mechanical detail, which show how engineers were adapting the steam technology of the period to American shipyards.
