The Washington Navy Yard, shown here, sat on the Anacostia River at the southeast edge of the city and was the first navy yard the United States established, in 1799. By the 1840s it was a working complex of shipbuilding, ordnance manufacture, and naval stores, and it was one of the city's major employers. This steel engraving appeared as an illustration in an 1842 guidebook, *Morrison's Stranger's Guide to the City of Washington*, which aimed to introduce visitors to the capital's notable sites. Steel engraving gave such guides crisp, detailed views of buildings and waterfront, so the plate shows the yard much as a visitor of that decade would have seen it.
