This drawing is a detail study of the steam engine at the Washington Navy Yard, with close attention to the flywheel, cam ring, and flywheel gudgeon, the bearing that supports the wheel's axle. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the architect and engineer who served as Surveyor of the Public Buildings in Washington, prepared it in Philadelphia on March 22, 1810. Steam power was still new in American workshops then, and the Navy Yard, the young federal shipbuilding center on the Anacostia River, was one of the places where it was put to practical use. The sheet's pencil and wash lines show how Latrobe worked out the mechanical parts before they were built.
