The Washington Navy Yard, on the Anacostia River in the southeast part of the city, was established in 1799 and is the oldest of the Navy's shore installations. This view turns to its dry dock, the basin where ships could be floated in, drained and repaired out of the water. Such facilities were essential to keeping a fleet in service, and the yard's shops, foundries and ordnance work made it one of the government's most important industrial sites in the capital. Prints like this one show how closely the city's growth was tied to its maritime and military work along the river.
