Six Marines standing at attention with fixed bayonets make this Navy Yard scene stand out from the many Washington views on the board. The photograph is a wet collodion glass negative from 1864, made by Mathew B. Brady's studio during the Civil War. The Washington Navy Yard, on the Anacostia River, was a major base for ordnance and shipbuilding, and its marine guard was a visible sign of the Union's naval strength in the capital. Brady's team photographed the war extensively, so this image offers a close look at the disciplined, ceremonial bearing expected of military units of the period.
