Crowds filed past the body of William Jennings Bryan at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, where the three-time Democratic presidential nominee was mourned in late July 1925. Bryan had died in Dayton, Tennessee, days after his part in the Scopes "Monkey Trial," and his return to the capital drew both politicians and ordinary citizens. The National Photo Company, which documented street life and public events across Washington in these years, made the picture on glass, and the streaks and flaws on the plate are signs of the negative's age rather than part of the scene.
