New York Avenue Presbyterian Church is the subject here, a Washington, D.C. landmark that stood on New York Avenue in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital from roughly 1910 to 1925, made this glass negative, which was later given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Glass plates like this one were the standard way to capture architecture in sharp detail, and the faint streaks and blemishes visible on the surface are signs of age in the original coating rather than flaws in the scene itself.
