The pew shown here is the one Abraham Lincoln rented while he attended New York Avenue Presbyterian Church during his presidency, which made this spot a destination for visitors. The photograph dates from sometime between 1910 and 1925 and belongs to the National Photo Company's large body of Washington views, which recorded the city's churches, monuments and streets in those years. The church's pastor, Phineas Gurley, spoke at the White House funeral service after Lincoln's death in 1865, a link that still draws historians to the building.
