A Lincoln automobile, credited to the Ford Motor Company, appears near the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Ford bought the Lincoln marque in 1922 and kept it as a separate luxury line, so the name places the picture in the years after that purchase. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded the capital's streets, landmarks and traffic on glass negatives in the early twentieth century. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
