The building in this picture is Garden Memorial Church in Anacostia, a neighborhood in southeast Washington that grew up along the Anacostia River and was long set apart from the city's downtown. The National Photo Company made a large body of street scenes and views of the capital in the early twentieth century, and this glass negative is probably from that work, though its record dates it only to roughly 1910 to 1925. Visitors may notice streaks and blotches on the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of its original coating rather than from the scene itself.
