The sign on this delivery truck names the James B. Lambie Co., a hardware business on New York Avenue Northwest, one of the capital's major diagonal thoroughfares. The picture was made as a glass negative sometime between 1910 and 1920, when motor trucks were becoming a common sight on Washington streets alongside horses and wagons. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a firm that documented the city's streets, buildings and businesses, with many views sold as postcards. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947, and the streaks across its surface come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
