Pennsylvania Avenue, the broad boulevard that runs from the Capitol toward the White House, is the setting for this 1916 view of a preparedness parade. The preparedness movement pushed for a larger army and stronger national defense as tensions with Germany and unrest along the Mexican border grew, and marches like this one were held in cities across the country to build public support. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded Washington street life in glass negatives during these years, made the image, and the streaks and blemishes on the plate come from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
