The Grand Review of May 24, 1865 was the Union Army's victory parade down Pennsylvania Avenue, when troops marched past the reviewing stand in front of the White House in Washington, D.C. This glass negative records the procession at Fifteenth Street and the avenue, a corner where the crowds and the reviewing party were close enough to be seen clearly. The parade was held two months after Lee's surrender at Appomattox and ended the war's largest military gatherings in the capital. The negative came to the Library of Congress through the National Photo Company Collection, though its title was supplied from unverified data, so the exact vantage point is best read with some caution.
