A Red Cross parade moving past the White House in May 1918 sets this view apart from other street scenes of wartime Washington. The American Red Cross recruited large numbers of volunteers during the First World War, and its marches and fundraising drives drew crowds to the capital's main avenues. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded Washington street life and public events in the early twentieth century. It survives as a glass negative, and its surface shows streaks and other blemishes from natural deterioration of the original coating.
