Dated April 5, 1926, this scene at the White House during the Easter season survives as a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the city's streets, monuments and official occasions in the early twentieth century. The date falls on the Monday after Easter Sunday, when the annual egg roll on the White House lawn was customarily held, a tradition that dated to the Hayes administration in the 1870s. The title was copied from the negative sleeve and has not been verified, so the picture is best read as a record of the season rather than a confirmed event. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from the natural breakdown of the original coatings.
