Cornelius Vanderbilt is named in this glass negative of his visit to the White House on June 20, 1925, a scene recorded by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that photographed officials and visitors in the 1910s and 1920s. The Vanderbilt name was tied to the railroad and shipping fortune of the Gilded Age, so a member of that family calling at the executive mansion was a notable sight in the capital. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating, a common sign of age in plates from this period.
