A garden party for wounded veterans on the White House grounds, dated May 21, 1925, sets this view apart from the many official exteriors of the executive mansion made in Washington that year. Calvin Coolidge was president at the time, and gatherings like this one reflected the country's continuing efforts to honor former servicemen disabled in the First World War. The National Photo Company, active in the capital during the 1910s and 1920s, recorded ceremonies, buildings and street life on glass negatives like this one. Faint streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coatings run across the plate, so some fine detail in the crowd is harder to make out.
