Ethel Barrymore, a member of the celebrated Barrymore theatrical family, is the subject of this view made at the White House in Washington, D.C., on April 25, 1925. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital's public life in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, a format widely used for press and portrait work of that era. Visitors should notice the streaks and blemishes across the surface, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion coatings on the glass rather than from the scene itself.
