Taken about a week after Calvin Coolidge began his full term as president on March 4, 1925, this glass negative records a visit by Ambassador Maltzahn to the White House. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington for much of the early twentieth century, made a large body of pictures documenting official life in the capital. Glass plates like this one were the standard way to produce sharp prints at the time, but the coatings often break down, which leaves the streaks and blemishes visible here. The title comes from the company's own notes and has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion is worth treating with some caution.
