Ralph O. Brewster, governor of Maine, is pictured at the White House in a photograph dated April 22, 1925, a few months after he took office that January. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that spent decades photographing officials and visitors to the capital, made the image, so the plate reflects the everyday business of public life in the mid-1920s. Brewster, a Republican, later served in the U.S. Senate. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, a common condition in negatives of this age.
