A baseball team from Osaka, Japan, posed at the White House in Washington, D.C., on June 4, 1925, according to the title on this glass negative. Visiting athletic squads were a common part of early twentieth-century diplomacy and sports exchange between the United States and Japan, and baseball had become popular in Japan by then. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented visitors and public life in the capital, made the picture. Viewers may notice streaks and small blemishes, which come from the natural breakdown of the original glass plate coatings.
