Few pictures from December 1925 put a film star at the White House quite like this one, which records silent-screen actress Irene Rich during a visit to the executive mansion in Washington. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital from the 1910s into the 1930s, produced many portraits of visitors, officials and celebrities, and its glass negatives remain a valuable record of the period. Rich was a popular leading lady of the silent era, and a visit like this shows how film personalities were drawn into Washington's public life. The faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from age in the original coating, not from the scene itself.
