The Easter egg roll on the White House grounds is the event this glass negative records, taken in 1915 and held in the National Photo Company Collection. The annual tradition, which children and families gathered for on the lawn, dates back to the 19th century, and by the 1910s it had become a fixture of the spring calendar in the capital. The negative is a 4 by 6 inch glass plate, and its surface shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age in the original coatings, a reminder of how these early photographs were made and preserved.
