Children gather for the Easter egg roll in Washington, D.C., on April 21, 1924, a date taken from a related negative in the collection. By then the event was a long-running tradition: after egg rolling on the Capitol grounds was stopped, it moved to the White House lawn in 1878 during President Rutherford B. Hayes's administration. The National Photo Company, which documented the capital in the early twentieth century, made pictures like this on glass plates, and the record notes that this negative may show streaks from the gradual breakdown of its original coating.
