Easter Monday was a popular day for families to get out of the city, and this photoprint, dated around 1905, shows the National Zoological Park crowded with holiday visitors. The park, established by Congress in 1889 under the Smithsonian Institution and opened in Rock Creek Park in 1891, was then one of the capital's most popular destinations for ordinary Washingtonians. The print is credited to Ross Truago and gives a sense of how the zoo served as a public gathering place in the early twentieth century.
