The National Tabernacle is a church in Washington, D.C., and this print, likely made between about 1946 and 1950, shows it at a time when the city was growing quickly after the Second World War. Postwar population growth and new federal jobs brought many new congregations and larger church buildings to the capital, and a tabernacle, a name often chosen for a large auditorium-style house of worship, reflects that expansion. The picture comes from the Werner E. Weber Collection, a group of mid-century photographic prints that documents Washington's streets and institutions in the years before the city changed dramatically.
