Few parlor objects of the early 1920s drew as much attention as the Ouija board, and this photograph shows one made by the National Ouija Board Co. of Washington, D.C. The game, with its lettered face and a planchette that players believed moved on its own, spread widely during the 1910s amid public fascination with spiritualism and séances. The National Photo Company, which recorded many scenes around Washington, captured the device around 1920, when the city's commercial and manufacturing life was growing. The picture is a useful glimpse of a fad that gave a local firm a national reputation.
