Deer at the National Zoo Park in Washington, D.C., were among the animals that drew visitors to the grounds in the early twentieth century. The Smithsonian Institution had established the zoo in 1889 on land in the northwest part of the city, giving residents a chance to see wildlife without leaving town. The picture comes from a glass negative made by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington's streets, monuments and institutions in the years before 1923. Streaks and spots across the negative come from the natural breakdown of its original coating over time, so they are worth keeping in mind when judging its tones.
