Camels at the National Zoological Park, the Smithsonian's zoo on the grounds of Rock Creek Park, make an unusual subject for a Washington view from about 1906. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture, built its business on travel views of American cities and landmarks, and many of its large glass negatives were later printed as color photochroms for tourists. The negative came to the collection as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. The scene reflects an era when zoos offered city visitors the chance to see exotic animals up close as a popular outing.
