The Rochambeau statue in Lafayette Square stands as the subject here, a bronze honoring Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau (1725-1807), the French general who commanded the expeditionary force that fought alongside Washington's Continental Army. The monument was dedicated in 1902 and sits across from the White House, which places it at the center of the city's ceremonial landscape. Made as a dry plate glass negative around 1900 to 1910, the view belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company's large body of commercial photographs, prized for their sharp detail and early color-tinted printing methods.
