Elk graze in an enclosure at the National Zoological Park, the Smithsonian's zoo in Rock Creek Park, which opened in 1889 in northwest Washington. Around 1906, when this glass negative was made, the zoo was a popular outing for families and visitors to the capital. The picture came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, scenery and attractions for postcards and souvenirs, so it shows the everyday sightseeing of the period.
